What Boca Families Should Know Before Hiring a Nanny

A practical guide for Boca Raton families — what to look for, what to ask, what to pay, and how to avoid the most common hiring mistakes.

Boca Raton is one of South Florida's most desirable places to raise a family. With top-rated schools, gated communities like Woodfield Country Club and St. Andrews, and a calendar full of youth sports and activities, it's no surprise that thousands of families call Boca home. But when it comes to hiring a nanny, many Boca families — especially first-time parents and families relocating from out of state — don't know where to start.

At Signature Nannies, we've been placing nannies, baby nurses, and household staff with Boca Raton families since 2005. Here's what every Boca family should know before hiring a nanny.

1. Know What Type of Nanny You Actually Need

Not all nannies are the same. Before you start your search, be clear about what you need:

  • Full-time nanny — 40+ hours/week, typically for families with both parents working. Handles school drop-offs, activities, meal prep, and child development.
  • Part-time nanny — 15–25 hours/week, often for after-school coverage or families with one parent at home.
  • Live-in nanny — resides in your home. Popular with Boca families who travel frequently or need flexible, around-the-clock coverage.
  • Baby nurse / Newborn Care Specialist (NCS) — specialized in newborn care during the first 6–16 weeks. Overnight shifts, feeding support, sleep training.
  • Night nanny — overnight-only coverage so parents can sleep. Typically 10pm–6am.

Many Boca families start with a baby nurse for the newborn period, then transition to a full-time nanny once the baby is 3–4 months old. Understanding which type you need — and when — saves time and money.

2. Understand the Real Cost of a Nanny in Boca Raton

Boca Raton nanny rates are among the highest in South Florida, reflecting the cost of living and the expectations of families in the area. Here's what to expect in 2026:

  • Full-time nanny (hourly): $22–$35/hour, depending on experience and responsibilities
  • Live-in nanny (weekly): $1,200–$2,500/week, including room and board
  • Baby nurse / NCS (hourly): $30–$45/hour for overnight newborn care
  • Agency referral fee: $1,500–$3,500 flat fee (one-time, not a percentage of salary)

The most important thing to understand: the nanny's salary and the agency's fee are separate. You pay the nanny directly — the agency does not take a cut of the salary. At Signature Nannies, our fee is a flat one-time payment with no hidden markups.

3. Always Verify These Five Things

Whether you hire through an agency or on your own, never skip these checks:

  1. National criminal background check — not just a county-level search. A national search catches records from other states, which matters for families relocating to Boca from New York, New Jersey, or other states.
  2. CPR and Pediatric First Aid certification — current and verifiable. Ask to see the actual certification card, not just a claim on a resume.
  3. Direct reference calls — not written reference letters. A 10-minute phone call with a previous employer reveals more than any letter ever will.
  4. Driving record — if the nanny will be driving your children (to Pinecrest School, Boca Prep, or local activities), request a motor vehicle record check.
  5. Social media review — this is not about being nosy. It's about ensuring the person caring for your children presents themselves professionally and doesn't post content that could compromise your family's privacy.

4. Ask the Right Interview Questions

Boca families often focus on logistics (hours, pay, availability) and skip the behavioral questions that reveal whether a nanny is the right fit. Here are five questions every family should ask:

  • "Tell me about a time you had a disagreement with a parent about how to handle a situation. How did you resolve it?"
  • "What would you do if my child had a fever and I was unreachable for 30 minutes?"
  • "How do you handle screen time, and what's your approach to outdoor play in South Florida's heat?"
  • "Have you ever worked with a family in a gated community or country club setting? What was that like?"
  • "What are your boundaries around social media? Would you ever post photos of a child in your care?"

5. Understand the Difference Between an Agency and a Placement Service

Not all nanny agencies operate the same way. Some charge a percentage of the nanny's annual salary (10–20%), which means a $45,000 nanny could cost you $4,500–$9,000 in agency fees — and some charge ongoing monthly fees on top of that. Others operate as a referral agency with a flat fee, which is more transparent and often less expensive.

Signature Nannies is a referral agency. Our fee is flat ($1,500–$3,500 depending on the placement tier and replacement guarantee you choose). We don't take a cut of the nanny's salary, and there are no ongoing fees. The employment relationship is directly between you and the nanny.

6. Get a Replacement Guarantee in Writing

Even with the best vetting, not every placement works out. A reputable agency will offer a replacement guarantee — if the nanny leaves or isn't working out within a specified period (90 days to 12 months), the agency will find a replacement at no additional fee. Always get this in writing before you pay.

7. Don't Forget About the Nanny's Perspective

The best placements happen when both the family and the nanny feel respected. In Boca Raton's competitive market, experienced nannies have choices. If you want to attract and retain a top-tier nanny:

  • Offer a clear, written work agreement covering hours, duties, pay schedule, and paid time off
  • Pay fairly — don't try to negotiate below market rate for an experienced professional
  • Respect their time — if you say the job is 40 hours/week, don't consistently ask for 50
  • Provide a comfortable, private space for live-in nannies
  • Treat them as a professional, not just an employee
